As a Certified Master Injector with 15+ years of experience, patients often ask me about the difference between Botox and filler.  Let me explain . . .

Botox is a highly refined protein that is injected into facial muscles, which stops the contraction of muscles. This causes the skin overlying the muscle to not have movement, which reduces the appearance of unwanted wrinkles.

Botox is used to treat dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles in motion, caused by the contraction of muscle. The results last approximately 3-6 months, at which point wrinkles return to their original state. Botox is considered safe and has been in use since 1989. Long-term, regular Botox injections yield the best results, as the longer the muscles stay relaxed the more the skin remains smooth, allowing for the prevention of new wrinkles and stopping the progression of current wrinkles.

Botox results after injection can take up to 10 days to see the full effects. Some very slight bruising and redness at the injection site may occur, but will quickly dissipate. Common areas treated are the frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet, gummy smiles, and radial lip lines (smokers lines).

Dermal filler is used to treat static wrinkles, wrinkles visible when the face is not moving. Juvederm is the filler of choice for our practice. It is made from hyaluronic acid which is already present in the human body. Dermal fillers are used to add volume and fullness to the contours of the face.

Juvederm is considered a temporary filler and results can last between 4-12 months. Dermal fillers are used to treat thinned lips, smile lines, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. It is common to experience some bruising and swelling after injections. These however are very temporary, and the results are considered immediate.

These modalities can be used either in conjunction or singly to achieve your desired outcome. A cosmetic consultation with a qualified injector is the first step in determining which treatments may help you to achieve your personal skin care goals.
