  1. Botox is very painful
  2. Wrinkles get worse when you stop receiving Botox
  3. Botox is toxic for you
  4. Botox is addictive
  5. Botox will make me look frozen like an ice queen

Botox Cosmetic is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) in between the brows and along the forehead.  Botox can also be used medically to treat excessive sweating, migraines, eyelid spasms, TMJ and even drooling.  Botox was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002. Some women were having treatments done well before that.  We wanted to provide you with this valuable information so that you can make a more informed decisions about your cosmetic treatment plan.

If you have heard that having Botox done is very painful, that indeed is a myth.  The size of the needle that is used to administer the Botox is literally smaller than your average sewing needle.  The actual feeling is similar to a little tiny bee sting for most people. After your formal cosmetic consultations with one of our medical providers, if you decide to have the treatment done following your consultation the provider will clean and prep the area to be injected and then the sites will be marked with a white cosmetic pencil.  You then will receive your treatment and be on your way.  It takes anywhere from 24 hours to seven days for the Botox to “settle” and to actually see your results, depending on your body’s response to the treatment.

Your wrinkles will under no circumstance become more prominent if and when you stop receiving treatments.  The skin and areas of concern will more than likely slowly return back to the way you looked before receiving any treatments.  It would be a wise decision to still work on maintaining healthy skin by using medical-grade skincare products and protecting yourself from UV damage by using a mineral based broad spectrum sunscreen. If you are in need of a new and improved skincare regimen you can certainly have a complimentary consultation with one of our experienced aestheticians.

Botox is in fact the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, with more than 6 million Botox treatments administered each year.  Botulinum toxin is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the underlying muscles.  Botox the cosmetic is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic. Botox normally last three to four months and then needs to be touched up or done again.

Although you may be addicted to looking and feeling more youthful, Botox is not physically addictive at all.  If that is what you’ve heard it’s a myth!  Many women and even men are starting to get Botox treatments when facial movement around the eyes and forehead start becoming moe noticeable.  This can help to prevent lines from forming or deepening.  For much deeper lines and wrinkles you may want to also consult about filler treatments such as Juvederm as well.

Our goal here at Connolly Dermatology is to help you look refreshed and rejuvenated while still maintaining a natural looking result. We never want our patients to loose facial expression or not have good movement wherever the Botox was injected.  If you have been considering having some cosmetic work done we advise you to schedule a full consultation with one of our experienced medical providers.   We hope you enjoyed this piece and that you took away some valuable myth busting information.
