What is Superficial Radiation?

A safe, gentle, and effective non-surgical option often referred to as SRT, Superficial Radiotherapy is a low-energy radiotherapy that is used to treat non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC), such as Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). Unlike radiation that is used to treat other types of cancers, SRT only penetrates about five millimeters below the skin’s surface, preserving the surrounding tissue while effectively destroying the cancerous tumor.

How does SRT work?

At the Connolly Dermatology Skin Cancer Center we will isolate the lesion by placing the applicator cone of the Sensus SRT- 100+ over the treatment area. Throughout a series of treatments several times a week, small dosages of radiation will be administered directly to the skin cancer. When radiation interacts with cancerous cells, the cell’s DNA is altered disabling cell reproduction. The result is eradication of the skin cancer.

WHY CHOOSE SRT?

Non-Invasive

No breaking of the skin is necessary, no anesthesia required, making treatments completely painless, and eliminating any post reconstructive surgery. A great treatment option for patients that are high risk for surgical procedures.

Minimal to NO Scarring

No cutting is involved so there is essentially no scarring, leaving a cosmetically pleasing outcome on treatment areas especially on face, neck, legs, folds of the ears, nose, etc..

No Downtime

No open wounds to care for and no stitches involved, allowing you to enjoy your normal daily activities such as showering, swimming, or exercising.

High Cure Rate

Superficial Radiation Therapy has a 95% cure rate for Non-Melanoma skin Cancer (NMSC).

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your first appointment is a “simulation” almost like a dress rehearsal. During this initial appointment photos, markings, and measurements are taken as well as a consultation regarding your treatment plan.

SRT projects low dose radiation to the skin cancer. An average of 13 – 15 short visits. Treatments will be scheduled 2-3 times a week, making the course of treatment about 5 weeks.

Once the treatment begins, it will take less than 60 seconds to deliver the therapy.

The treatment is PAINLESS, but experiencing slight redness comparable to mild sunburn during the course of treatment is normal.

Post treatment, the skin may form a protective scab, healthy skin will develop underneath.
