Dermaplaning is an effective method of manual exfoliation, i.e. the removal of dead skin without the use of chemicals. There are many different methods of exfoliation out there, all with the same goal in mind: to reveal healthy, happy, glowing skin. Since dermaplaning is an increasingly popular treatment option in our offices, we’d like to talk about what you can expect both during and after the procedure.

As we age, the cell turnover rate of the skin slows down which may leave the skin looking drab and dull. Sun exposure can cause hyper-pigmentation, adding to the look of aging skin. Regular exfoliation can help to lighten and brighten the skin. The actual process includes a deep cleansing treatment, removal of any blackheads or congestion within the skin, and a light scraping of dead skin using a surgical steel blade. The added benefit of this procedure is the removal of embedded makeup residue and pesky peach fuzz. The hair will not grow back thicker or more aggressively because of this process. Finally, a light massage will finish off the treatment.

There is no real downtime after a dermaplaning treatment, but you may be slightly pink the day of your treatment depending on how sensitive your skin is. We do not recommend wearing cosmetics like foundation immediately following your treatment. We suggest waiting until the next day to return back to your makeup routine. You can expect to see smoother skin, zero peach fuzz (until it grows back, of course), and brighter-looking skin. And because we’re removing all your dead skin cells, your skincare products will better penetrate your skin when you apply them, making them all the more effective.

If you are seeking smoother, healthier-looking skin this may be your answer.

Treatments such as facials, chemical peel, or any other method of skin upkeep need to be done regularly to maintain the benefits. It is also extremely important that you are thoroughly removing makeup in the evening, properly cleansing and moisturizing daily. I like to compare skin to how you care for your teeth. You visit the dentist for your deep cleanings and dental work and care for your teeth at home by brushing and flossing.
